American literature - an introduction



Our timeline deals with the American literature tradition separate from the English stream, knowing full well that they were taking place simultaneously and affecting each other in both directions. 

The beginning of the American literary tradition is closely linked to English forms and subjects, but with the growth of the nation came a distinctly American voice, which, in many cases, rose out to cry against the injustice and challenges of a nation with such diverse peoples.
